Dear Mary,

Academy students are an energetic bunch - they have to be. On a typical day, our ninety-five students arise before it's fully light, make the drive to Charlemont, and come together for morning meeting. In the course of this typical day, an Academy student might spend an hour in the computer lab revising an essay, take a short field trip to observe and classify a native hardwood species, develop a roll of film, help prepare and serve lunch, translate a short passage from Latin into English, rehearse a Gregorian chant, vote in school meeting, confer with an advisor, have a conversation in French or Spanish, use two variables to solve a word problem, sweep the common room floor, and score a goal on the soccer field. As our students get back on the bus to head home, the sun is just slipping below the treetops.

Surrounding the students and teachers who enliven the halls is another group of adults who are just as dedicated to The Academy's mission and values. Alumni/ae, trustees, parents of current and former students, grandparents, friends and family, neighbors, and community members nurture and support the school in myriad ways throughout the year, and, without the sustained commitment of this extended family, The Academy would not thrive.

I am inviting you to make a gift to The Academy's annual fund, as generous a gift as you are able to make. Everything that happens during a day in the life of an Academy student - twelve hours of learning experiences in classrooms, in studios, in labs, in and on the field, in the community - is supported in part by voluntary gifts to the school, Without scholarship aid, over half our students wouldn't be able to get on the bus in the first place. Your support of the annual fund both enables students to attend the school and enhances the quality of their experience: in every area of school life, the generosity of our donors is greatly needed and deeply felt. If one of these areas - scholarship, faculty support, academics, or arts and athletics - is of particular interest, you may direct your gift by checking the appropriate box on the enclosed envelope. What matters most is that you participate in the annual fund and help us sustain the good work The Academy has been doing for over twenty years.

Yours truly,

Todd
