the Temple of Hera at Olympia

...Turning west, we made the long run to Olympia through farming country, hilly and sometimes mountainous, if my memory serves me. Leaving our bags at the hotel in Olympia, we had lunch and then drove to the site of the Olympic Games, an extraordinarily large and multi-functional site with temples both of Hera and Zeus, shops, dormitories and gymnasia, and past all these, the stadium itself. Nikki's talk on the entire activity of the games was informative and interesting. A few of us walked to the far end of the stadium and ran the length of it, accompanied by the cheers of the rest. Well.. I ran partway, and walked the rest.

Dowsing at various locations on the temples of Zeus and then of Hera, I found no evidence of aliveness until I tried the ancient altar before Hera's temple at which until recently maidens chosen for their beauty and virtue had been the originators of the Olympic flame, using a burning glass. That one was alive with female energy! I found it necessary to chide myself inwardly for the habitual prejudice with which I had been accustomed to regard Hera as the vengeful, jealous wife of Zeus, and to remember the fact that she is far older than the classical myths make her out to be. Saluting her, I felt a sense of answering warmth.
