The Tibetan Children's Village
is a charitable organization working for the orphaned children of
Tibet in hope of ensuring the survival of Tibetan culture. It was
created by His Holiness The Dalai Lama (above) following his exile in
1959. It is run today by Mrs. Jetsun Pema, the Dalai Lama's sister.
The TCV provides orphans with a Tibetan education (clothes, food,
health care etc.). The Tibetan Children's Village contains the seeds
of "tomorrow's Tibet," and:
- cares for over 20,000 (this
number increases daily) needy children in four main children's
villages and five boarding schools.
- ensures proper schooling in
distant areas.
- looks after underprivileged,
handicapped and elderly persons.
- provides special educational
facilities for teenagers having escaped atrocities.
- publishes books for Tibetan
children in their own language.
- encourages self-sufficiency
and sets up handicraft centres, farms and technical schools to
help in need to find suitable employment in the
future.
- provides special assistance
and medical care where possible, and assists needy children
fortunate enough to be admitted into the TVC.
- Above all, it offers
children love, a family life and a future. But much remains to be
done, as thousands of Tibetans continue to flee oppression in
their country - Tibet.
- All children need the love,
warmth and security of a normal family life. We have created a
children's village with many facilities. All the children live in
groups called "khim-tsangs" - a typical Tibetan "home" with two
foster parents. Each of these homes is a self-contained family
group with its own house, kitchen and other facilities. Children
are brothers and sisters to each other and share the household
chores withg their parents. In addition to looking after the
physical, mental and spiritual needs of the children, TVC seeks
to:
- impart the best of modern
education along with a deep and intimate understanding of the rich
culture of Tibet
- cultivate a sense of
national identity that will enable the children to share the hopes
and aspirations of the Tibetan people to return someday to a free
and independent Tibet.
- help youg boys and girls to
become self-reliant, contributing members of society and the world
community.
- You can help by sponsoring a
child for $30 a month, or for a single month by writing or calling
