Helping children and families since 1851

EXECUTIVE BRIEFING

The children and adolescents who come to the Village for help tell us something profoundly important. They tell us what kind of world we've given them, and they portend the world that will be their children's legacy. We see our role as twofold: first, to advocate assertively for the rights of all children to a safe and healthy childhood; and second, to provide both the children in our care and their families with effective services that translate into real opportunities for a fair and fresh start.

When children and families come to us for help, they are often in deep despair. Some families are struggling to keep a seriously emotionally disturbed child at home; some are struggling against persistent poverty, inadequate and unsafe housing and schools, and lack of job opportunities; and some never deserved to be called a "family," having so traumatized and battered their offspring.
For families struggling to get it right, the Village provides the kind of support that can turn a fragile situation into a healthy one. And, in instances where children come to us for their very survival, we help them heal and develop the skills and attitudes they will need to be successful adults.

A gallery of photos lines the hallways of Wetmore Hall on our main campus in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Each picture shows a child who came to Children's Village filled with fear, despair, and promise-and the proud, productive adult he became. On our Alumni Link, we have included a small sampling of these alumni, proof that, given a fair and fresh start, even very troubled children can succeed.

The time we spend with the children in our care is a period stretched between a troubled past and an uncertain future. We offer our thanks to the generous donors, volunteers and friends who make it possible for Children's Village to change the odds-not only for today's vulnerable children, but for their children and grandchildren.

Giving troubled children a second chance
150 Years Helping Children Succeed

The Children's Village is a private, New York State, not-for-profit corporation. Since its inception in 1851, it has provided aid, comfort, and hope to over 80,000 children. The Village's first home was in New York City where, as The New York Juvenile Asylum, it addressed the enormous problem of homeless immigrant children living on city streets. In 1901, a 277-acre farm was purchased in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and the name was changed to The Children's Village. This campus, designed as a home-like therapeutic community, won the 1906 World's Fair Award for architecture. Gradually, the Village evolved into a sophisticated treatment center for emotionally scarred children who are victims of abuse, chronic neglect, or circumstances beyond the control of loving parents. Today, CV operates the largest residential treatment center in the country, and its programs are nationally recognized and replicated.

"Tell the boys of the New York Juvenile Asylum that they must follow Truth, Justice and Humanity if they wish to become useful and honorable men."

"I send (Children's Village) my best wishes. Every one of you has the same chance open to any of those who start life with the resolution to do his duty both to others and to himself."

"For well over a century, The Childrens Village has provided encouragement, love, and guidance for countless young men."

In addition to the original Dobbs Ferry campus, CV has nine facilities throughout the New York metropolitan area. These facilities house both residential and community-based programs devoted to furthering the mission of caring for society's most vulnerable children and their families.
