The Journal of Family Life began when a group of people in the Albany Free School community felt the need for a publication which would discuss issues of concern to families in the world that we all inhabit. We meet three times a week at 7.30 in the morning to create our journals before going on to the other busy tasks we have in life. It has been an exhilarating ride as we embark on the quest to find models of living that will help us all to seat ourselves back at the controls of our own lives. Our search is for the tools we need to be able to transform individual lives, and ultimately the entire community. We also examine the failure of our political, social and cultural institutions to meet the real needs of families.

The New School of Northern Virginia is a small, holistic school that seeks
to educate the whole child for the twenty-first century. The New School's student body
is inclusive, co-educational, and reflective of the diversity and richness of the Northern
Virginia community. Our school seeks students and families who support our philosophy,
who feel that the school can make a significant contribution to their child's growth, and
who can contribute to the life of the school.

PSCS's web page is an example of how one school is making use of the World Wide Web. It not only includes links to other educational resources, but includes links to student and staff home pages, the school newsletter, and is used to disseminate information to enrolled students and their families. PSCS believes the best education insures the freedom of students of all ages to think for themselves and to control their own destinies, structuring their time and activities as they best see fit.

Philosophy: "In the interest of providing an education which is appropriate and accessible to students with non-tratitional learning styles, problematic family and social backgrounds, and a history of chronic educational failure, The Community School provides an intensive educational environment which is individually tailored for each student. In order to complete their diploma requirements students not only have to remedy academic deficits, they must also work on the social, personal, and interpersonal issues which have been significant contributors to their past school failures."

Mission: "To provide and model a high school dropout prevention and return program in an environment encouraging a high level of personal commitment from students and staff. To offer a highly experiential curriculum leading to a high school diploma, where students can discover a strong sense of self worth while naming and addressing the issues which have sabotaged their success in school. To provide a long-term source of support for former students. To expand the understanding of learning and education for students, staff, and the community at large."
